About C: The Contra Adventure

C: The Contra Adventure is a third-person action shooter released for the PlayStation in 1998, developed by Appaloosa Interactive and published by Konami. It is one of the most unusual entries in the Contra series, mainly because it moves the franchise fully into early 3D gameplay while still trying to keep the classic run-and-gun identity alive.

The story follows series hero Ray Poward as he battles a new alien invasion threatening Earth after a meteor crash unleashes a powerful biological force. Compared to earlier Contra games, The Contra Adventure leans heavily into cinematic presentation, with cutscenes, rotating camera angles, and more structured level progression. The tone is darker and more survival-focused, with environments ranging from jungle ruins and industrial complexes to alien-infested facilities.

What makes this entry stand out is its mixed gameplay structure. Instead of sticking to pure side-scrolling or fixed arenas, the game shifts between different styles: behind-the-character 3D shooting, overhead segments, and occasional traditional platform-style sections. This variety was ambitious for its time but also gives the game a very experimental feel compared to the tight arcade pacing of earlier Contra titles.

Combat still centers around fast shooting, dodging enemy fire, and collecting weapon upgrades. Players can pick up familiar weapons like spread shots, rapid-fire guns, and explosives, though the 3D camera makes aiming and positioning more important than before. Enemy encounters often happen in wider environments, with enemies attacking from multiple angles instead of just the left and right sides of the screen.

Although The Contra Adventure is often seen as a more experimental and divisive entry in the series, it remains an interesting snapshot of how classic 2D franchises transitioned into 3D during the late 90s.

How To Play

In C: The Contra Adventure, players move through 3D environments while shooting enemies from a third-person perspective. The gameplay is more exploratory than earlier Contra games, with players navigating paths, turning corners, and engaging enemies that can appear from multiple directions.

Combat focuses on aiming, positioning, and reacting quickly to enemy attacks. Players collect weapon pickups throughout stages, including spread-type weapons and rapid-fire guns. Since aiming in 3D space is less precise than classic 2D shooting, movement and camera control play a bigger role in survival.

The game switches between different gameplay styles depending on the stage. Some sections are full 3D movement areas where players run through environments and shoot enemies freely. Others use more fixed camera angles or overhead perspectives, creating variety in how combat is handled.

Enemy encounters often involve groups of soldiers, alien creatures, and mechanical units attacking in waves. Players must constantly reposition to avoid getting surrounded, especially in larger open areas where threats come from multiple directions.

Boss fights are typically larger-scale encounters that require movement around wide arenas while dodging projectile attacks and environmental hazards. Because of the game’s 3D design, players need to pay attention not just to enemies in front, but also to threats coming from the sides and background.
