About The King of Fighters 2000

The King of Fighters 2000 (KOF 2000) is a classic 2D arcade fighting game released in 2000 by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade system, later ported to several home platforms. It continues the NESTS Saga storyline introduced in KOF ’99 and expands many of that game’s ideas, especially the team and assist mechanics.

The story follows the growing conflict between fighters and the mysterious NESTS organization, which is conducting dangerous experiments tied to cloned warriors and advanced military technology. Characters like K’, Maxima, Whip, and Kula Diamond become more central to the narrative as the series moves deeper into its sci-fi themes.

One of the biggest features in KOF 2000 is the expanded Striker System. Unlike the previous game, striker characters now play a much larger role during combat. Players can summon assists for combo extensions, pressure setups, or defensive interruptions, making matches faster and more chaotic than earlier entries.

The roster mixes returning veterans with new additions tied to the NESTS storyline. The game also includes several hidden and alternate striker characters, adding extra variety and replay value for arcade players experimenting with team combinations.

Visually, KOF 2000 keeps the detailed Neo Geo pixel-art style while adding more animated stages and flashy special effects. The presentation feels energetic and aggressive, matching the faster pace of the combat system.

Although it was released during a difficult period for SNK as a company, KOF 2000 is still remembered for its creative mechanics and its unique balance between traditional fighting gameplay and assist-based action.

How To Play

In The King of Fighters 2000, players build a team consisting of active fighters and striker assists. Matches are fought in a 1v1 sequence, but striker calls can temporarily bring extra characters into battle to attack or support the active fighter.

Combat uses the classic KOF control system with punches, kicks, throws, special moves, and super attacks. Players combine directional commands with attack buttons to create combos and pressure opponents at close or mid range.

The expanded Striker System is the main gameplay difference in this version. Strikers can interrupt enemy momentum, extend combos, or create safe openings for offense. Managing striker timing becomes just as important as mastering the main fighter roster.

Each character has a unique fighting style. Some specialize in rushdown attacks and fast combos, while others focus on spacing, projectiles, or counter-based defense. Choosing strikers that complement a team’s strengths is a major part of advanced play.

Stages are themed around military facilities, city environments, and futuristic locations connected to the NESTS storyline. Battles become increasingly intense as players move deeper into the tournament structure.

Winning requires fast reactions, good spacing, and smart use of striker assists to control pressure and maximize damage opportunities.
