About Cosmic Wars

Cosmic Wars is a turn-based strategy game developed by Konami and released in 1989. Unlike the fast-action shooters the company is better known for, this title takes a slower, more tactical approach to space warfare. It’s set in the Gradius universe, where the conflict between the Galactic Federation and the Bacterion Empire expands beyond single starfighter missions into full-scale fleet battles.

Instead of piloting a single ship, you take command of entire squadrons across a galactic map. Each turn represents a phase of movement or combat, where positioning and unit composition matter just as much as firepower. The game leans heavily into planning—choosing where to deploy forces, how to support advancing fleets, and when to engage or retreat becomes the core of every decision.

Combat plays out in structured encounters where ships exchange fire based on stats and formation strength rather than reflexes. Familiar elements from Gradius still appear in spirit, with recognizable ship types and enemy forces, but the focus shifts to large-scale strategy rather than arcade-style dodging.

Originally released on the Famicom/NES in Japan, Cosmic Wars remains a niche entry in Konami’s library, mostly remembered by fans of the Gradius series who wanted to see how its universe would translate into a strategy format. On Emulator Games Zone, you can play the NES version directly in your browser using a NES emulator.

How To Play

In Cosmic Wars, you control the Galactic Federation’s fleet across a star map divided into sectors controlled by the Bacterion Empire. Each turn allows you to move fleets, reinforce positions, or initiate battles when opposing forces meet.

Combat is resolved in a more structured format rather than real-time action. Units attack based on their type, positioning, and remaining strength. Some ships are built for offense, while others are better suited for defense or support roles, so choosing the right mix of forces becomes essential as enemy resistance increases.

The map gradually becomes more dangerous as the Bacterion Empire expands its control. Early encounters are relatively straightforward, but later stages require careful coordination of multiple fleets across different regions. Losing key units can quickly shift the balance of power.

Unlike action-heavy Gradius titles, Cosmic Wars focuses entirely on planning and resource management. Success depends on reading the battlefield, predicting enemy movement, and committing forces at the right moment rather than reacting in real time.
