About Gradius

Gradius is a legendary side-scrolling shoot ’em up developed and published by Konami. Originally released in arcades in 1985, it later arrived on the NES in 1986 and helped define the space shooter genre for an entire generation of players. The game puts you in control of the iconic Vic Viper starfighter as it fights against the Bacterion Empire across a series of dangerous alien worlds and deep-space battlefields.

Unlike many shooters of its time, Gradius introduced a unique power-up system that gave players more control over their ship's development. By collecting capsules from defeated enemies, you can choose when to activate upgrades such as Speed Up, Missiles, Lasers, Options, and Force Fields. This added a layer of strategy that made every run feel different and helped the game stand out from its competitors.

The original game was released on Arcade, NES/Famicom, MSX, PC-88, and several other platforms. The NES version became especially popular thanks to its faithful adaptation of the arcade experience and remains one of the console's most memorable shooters.

If you'd like to revisit this retro classic, Emulator Games Zone lets you play the NES version directly in your browser using a NES emulator, making it easy to experience one of Konami's most influential games.

How To Play

In Gradius, you guide the Vic Viper through a series of horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy ships, defensive installations, environmental hazards, and powerful bosses. Your ship can move freely around the screen while firing at enemies and collecting power capsules dropped during combat.

The heart of the gameplay is the upgrade bar located at the bottom of the screen. Each capsule moves the cursor forward, allowing you to activate specific upgrades when needed. Early stages often reward extra speed and missiles, while later areas become much easier with lasers, Options, and defensive shields. Choosing the right upgrade at the right time is an important part of mastering the game.

The NES version features several memorable stages, including asteroid fields, volcanic regions filled with erupting fireballs, and the famous Moai stage where giant stone heads launch energy rings at your ship. Every level ends with a boss battle that requires careful positioning and pattern recognition rather than simply firing nonstop.

One of the biggest challenges comes after losing a life, since most of your upgrades are removed. Success depends on learning enemy placements, understanding stage layouts, and rebuilding your ship efficiently. Combined with its strategic power-up system and distinctive stage design, the NES version of Gradius remains a rewarding shooter that still feels engaging decades after its original release.
