About Metal Slug 7

Metal Slug 7 is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter developed by SNK Playmore and released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS. Unlike earlier arcade-focused entries, this installment was designed specifically for handheld play, but it still keeps the chaotic action, detailed sprite work, and explosive combat the series is known for. The game continues the long-running conflict against General Morden’s army, mixing traditional military battles with bizarre sci-fi enemies, giant machines, and over-the-top boss fights.

Even on the Nintendo DS, the game manages to capture the fast energy of the arcade originals. Levels are packed with collapsing buildings, tanks flooding the screen, enemy helicopters firing from above, and nonstop explosions happening almost everywhere at once. The pixel art remains one of the strongest parts of the experience, with expressive character animations and surprisingly detailed backgrounds that make every stage feel busy and alive.

One of the biggest additions in Metal Slug 7 is the expanded combat system. Players can now carry two weapons at once and switch between them instantly during battle, making fights much more flexible. Character selection also matters more this time because each soldier has unique abilities. Some characters reload faster, others move quicker or deal more damage, giving players different ways to approach difficult stages.

Compared to older entries, this version feels slightly more aggressive and fast-moving. Enemy ambushes happen frequently, bosses attack with dense projectile patterns, and some levels push players through vertical climbing sections or high-speed escape sequences. Despite being on a handheld system, the game still feels like a classic Metal Slug experience — loud, chaotic, funny, and surprisingly challenging once the difficulty starts ramping up.

How To Play

In Metal Slug 7, players fight through side-scrolling stages filled with enemy soldiers, tanks, aircraft, alien creatures, and massive mechanical bosses. Basic controls focus on running, jumping, crouching, shooting, and throwing grenades while avoiding incoming attacks. Enemy fire comes from nearly every direction, so movement and quick reactions are extremely important throughout the game.

A major gameplay feature in this version is the dual-weapon system. Players can carry two weapons simultaneously and switch between them instantly depending on the situation. Heavy machine guns are useful for crowd control, rocket launchers deal huge damage to armored enemies, and specialized weapons like lasers or flame shots can clear difficult sections quickly. Ammo management becomes especially important during longer boss battles where wasting stronger weapons too early can make survival much harder later.

Players can choose from several characters, each with different strengths. Marco has stronger firearms, Eri specializes in grenades, and other characters offer abilities that slightly change gameplay strategy. This adds replay value because certain stages feel easier depending on the character selected.

Levels include collapsing bridges, underground tunnels, moving elevators, underwater combat sections, and high-speed vehicle sequences that constantly change the pacing. The iconic Metal Slug vehicles also return, giving players temporary armor and devastating firepower against large enemy groups. Boss fights are massive multi-stage battles filled with missiles, lasers, and screen-wide attacks that require constant movement and precise timing to survive.
