About Metal Slug Games

Metal Slug Games first appeared in arcades in 1996 on SNK’s Neo Geo hardware and quickly became famous for their fast run-and-gun gameplay, detailed pixel art, and nonstop action. Compared to more serious military shooters from the same era, Metal Slug mixed chaotic combat with exaggerated animations, strange enemies, and a surprisingly playful sense of humor. Explosions fill the screen constantly, but the games never take themselves too seriously.

The gameplay is built around side-scrolling shooting, quick movement, and reacting to large groups of enemies at once. Players run through battlefields filled with soldiers, tanks, helicopters, alien creatures, traps, and giant bosses while dodging heavy enemy fire. The controls stay simple — shooting, jumping, grenades, and vehicle controls — but the action becomes intense very quickly, especially during later missions.

Weapon pickups are a huge part of the series. Heavy Machine Guns, Rocket Launchers, Flame Shots, and Laser weapons can completely change how players approach enemy waves and boss fights. Losing a strong weapon after getting hit can make difficult sections much harder, especially since most games use a one-hit death system.

The Metal Slug vehicles themselves are one of the series’ most recognizable features. Tanks, submarines, flying machines, and armored walkers appear throughout different stages, often turning normal combat sections into full-scale destruction sequences. The games also constantly surprise players with strange transformations, hidden prisoners, alternate routes, and over-the-top boss battles.

Metal Slug Games became especially popular in arcades because of local co-op. Playing with another person usually turns the chaos into something even more entertaining, especially when both players are desperately trying to survive giant boss attacks and crowded enemy swarms together.
