About Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a classic side-scrolling platform game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1988. Developed and published by Nintendo, the game took the Mario series in a very different direction compared to the original Super Mario Bros., introducing new mechanics, playable characters, and a more unusual fantasy setting.

Instead of traveling through the traditional Mushroom Kingdom, the adventure takes place in the dream-like world of Subcon, where Mario and friends must stop the villain Wart and free the land from his control. The game feels more colorful and experimental than earlier Mario titles, with vertical climbing sections, underground areas, and enemies that behave differently from standard Mario games.

One of the biggest changes is the addition of four playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad. Each character handles differently, giving players more freedom in how they approach platform stages. Luigi jumps higher, Princess can briefly float through the air, Toad is faster at lifting objects, and Mario remains the balanced all-around choice.

Unlike the first game, enemies are usually defeated by picking up and throwing vegetables, blocks, or objects instead of stomping on them directly. This gives Super Mario Bros. 2 a unique pace that feels closer to a puzzle-platform adventure at times.

How To Play

In Super Mario Bros. 2, you choose one of four playable characters before entering each stage. Every character has different movement abilities, which affects jumping, lifting speed, and overall control during platform sections.

The game uses side-scrolling platform gameplay, but stages are more open and vertical compared to the original Super Mario Bros. Players climb ladders, enter caves, ride moving platforms, and explore hidden areas while avoiding enemies and hazards.

Instead of relying mostly on jumping attacks, combat revolves around picking up objects and throwing them. You can pull vegetables from the ground, carry blocks, grab enemies, and toss them at obstacles or other enemies to clear paths forward.

Some stages also contain locked doors, hidden potions, and temporary alternate areas that reward exploration. Coins collected during levels can later be used in small bonus games for extra lives.

Boss encounters appear throughout the adventure and usually require players to throw objects accurately while avoiding attacks in smaller battle arenas.

Because every character moves differently, replaying stages with another character can completely change how certain platform sections feel, especially during difficult jumps or enemy-heavy areas.
