About Super Bomberman 4

Super Bomberman 4 is a maze action game developed by Hudson Soft for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and released in 1996. It was only officially released in Japan, but the game later became popular worldwide through imports and emulation because of its expanded gameplay systems and creative multiplayer design.

Compared to the earlier SNES Bomberman titles, Super Bomberman 4 adds much more variety to both movement and combat. The biggest new feature is the return of the animal companions, known as Louies, but this time each Louie comes with completely different bomb abilities instead of simple movement upgrades. Depending on the Louie color, bombs can bounce, spread in lines, pierce obstacles, or create unusual explosion patterns that dramatically change how stages are played.

The single-player adventure follows White Bomberman and Black Bomberman as they travel across different worlds to stop Bagular and the invading alien forces once again. Stages are more dynamic than before, featuring slippery floors, conveyor systems, moving platforms, and environmental hazards that constantly affect positioning. The game feels more experimental overall, especially compared to the simpler structure of the earlier entries.

Visually, Super Bomberman 4 pushes the SNES hardware further with brighter effects, larger bosses, and more animated environments. Multiplayer battles also feel more chaotic because of the new bomb types and stage mechanics. Matches can change instantly once players start combining special Louie abilities with chain explosions inside crowded arenas.

Many fans still consider Super Bomberman 4 one of the most creative games in the SNES Bomberman series because it keeps the classic formula intact while adding far more unpredictable strategies.

How To Play

In Super Bomberman 4, players move through maze-like stages while placing bombs to destroy blocks, uncover items, and defeat enemies. Hidden exits must still be found beneath soft walls, but the stage design is much more interactive than earlier Bomberman games.

The biggest gameplay difference comes from the redesigned Louie system. Each colored Louie changes bomb behavior in a different way. Some bombs can bounce across walls, others travel in straight lines, and some create unusual blast patterns that cover larger parts of the stage. This adds much more experimentation to both single-player and multiplayer matches.

Stages also include more environmental mechanics than previous SNES entries. Conveyor belts, moving walkways, slippery ice floors, and narrow maze layouts force players to think carefully before placing bombs. Poor positioning becomes much more dangerous once special bomb effects start filling the screen.

The single-player mode includes larger boss encounters and more aggressive enemy patterns, while Battle Mode focuses heavily on multiplayer strategy. Different bomb abilities can completely change arena control, especially when combined with hidden power-ups and chain reactions. Matches often become chaotic very quickly once upgraded bombs begin bouncing or spreading across the map in unexpected directions.
