About Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a turn-based role-playing game developed through a collaboration between Square and Nintendo, and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. It was the first RPG starring Mario and introduced a fresh style of adventure that blended the familiar Mushroom Kingdom with RPG mechanics, memorable original characters, and an engaging story.

The adventure begins when a mysterious sword crashes into Bowser's Castle, scattering the powerful Star Pieces across the world and disrupting the wishes protected by Star Road. To restore balance, Mario sets out on a journey that brings together an unlikely group of allies, including Princess Toadstool, Bowser, the cloud warrior Mallow, and the silent puppet Geno. Rather than focusing on Bowser as the main villain, the story introduces the Smithy Gang, whose invasion gives the game a unique identity within the Mario universe.

Exploration combines colorful towns, hidden treasures, environmental puzzles, and light platforming with traditional RPG progression. Every area is filled with optional secrets, humorous dialogue, and creative events that make the world feel lively. The game's isometric perspective also allows players to jump across platforms, discover concealed items, and interact with the environment in ways that were uncommon for RPGs at the time.

How To Play

Guide Mario through towns, forests, castles, and dungeons while searching for the scattered Star Pieces. As you explore, you'll solve environmental puzzles, uncover hidden treasure chests, speak with townspeople, and recruit new party members, each offering different strengths and special abilities.

Combat uses a turn-based battle system, but timing plays an important role. Pressing the action button at the right moment can increase the damage of attacks or reduce incoming damage when defending. These timed commands make battles feel more interactive than many traditional RPGs and reward careful attention instead of simply selecting commands from a menu.

Your party can consist of three active characters, allowing you to combine different attacks, healing abilities, and magical skills depending on the enemies you face. Equipment upgrades, consumable items, and experience points help strengthen the team throughout the adventure, while optional bosses and hidden treasures encourage exploration beyond the main story.

The SNES version also includes a variety of minigames, platforming challenges, and humorous character interactions that break up the pace of combat. Combined with its distinctive battle mechanics and memorable cast, the game offers an RPG experience that feels different from both traditional Mario platformers and classic fantasy role-playing games.
