About The King of Fighters '94
The King of Fighters '94 (KOF ’94) is a classic 2D fighting game released in 1994 for arcades (Neo Geo MVS) and later brought to home systems by SNK. It is the very first entry in the long-running King of Fighters series, and it introduced the now-iconic team-based fighting format that set it apart from other arcade fighters of its time.
Instead of one-on-one matches alone, KOF ’94 brings fighters from different SNK franchises together into three-person teams, creating crossover matchups that felt fresh and unexpected in the arcade era. Characters like Kyo Kusanagi, Terry Bogard, and Ryo Sakazaki share the same tournament stage, forming the foundation of the series’ legacy.
The story revolves around a mysterious global fighting tournament hosted by Rugal Bernstein, a wealthy and dangerous organizer who uses the competition as a way to test and collect powerful fighters. As players progress through the tournament brackets, they uncover increasingly intense battles leading to a final confrontation in Rugal’s aircraft carrier base.
Gameplay follows traditional 2D fighting mechanics with punches, kicks, special moves, and supers, but the team system adds strategic depth. Players must manage three fighters per match, deciding when to switch, how to preserve health, and how to match up against opposing team compositions.
The game also reflects the early Neo Geo fighting style: fast-paced rounds, responsive controls, and strong emphasis on spacing, timing, and combo execution. Each character has a distinct fighting style drawn from different SNK universes, making team composition an important part of the experience.
How To Play
In The King of Fighters ’94, players select a team of three fighters and compete in a bracket-style tournament against other teams. Each match is a 1v1 fight, but once a character is defeated, the next team member takes their place until one team runs out of fighters.
Combat uses a standard fighting game layout: light and heavy punches, kicks, and directional inputs to perform special moves. Players build momentum by chaining attacks, reading opponent movement, and controlling distance during fights.
The team system adds an extra layer of strategy. Since health carries over between rounds for surviving fighters, players need to decide when to use stronger characters and when to conserve them for later battles.
Each character has unique move sets, including projectiles, grapples, and close-range rush attacks. Learning how each fighter behaves is key to building effective team combinations and countering opponents.
Matches take place in diverse stages representing different regions, with background details that reflect the global tournament theme.
Winning requires not only mechanical execution but also understanding spacing, timing, and when to switch momentum during multi-fighter battles.
