About Super Contra

Super Contra is a classic run-and-gun shooter developed and published by Konami. Originally released in arcades in 1988, the game later arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as Super C in North America. It serves as the direct sequel to the original Contra and keeps the same fast-paced action while adding new stage designs, enemies, and larger-scale battles.

The story takes place one year after the events of Contra. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean return to stop another alien invasion after enemy forces attack a military base. Like the original game, Super Contra focuses almost entirely on nonstop action. Players blast through military compounds, jungles, alien tunnels, and heavily defended enemy facilities while surviving huge waves of bullets and enemies.

Compared to the first Contra, Super Contra has a slightly darker and more aggressive atmosphere. The stages feel more chaotic, enemy patterns are heavier, and the action moves even faster during later levels. The NES version also changes the base stages from the pseudo-3D view used in Contra into top-down combat sections, giving the sequel a different gameplay rhythm while still keeping the core shooting mechanics intact.

The weapon system returns with classic upgrades like the Spread Gun, Laser, and Rapid Fire weapons. The Spread Gun remains one of the most useful choices because of how well it handles crowded enemy attacks. The controls are extremely responsive, which becomes important because the game is even more demanding than the original Contra in some sections.

Super Contra is also remembered for its strong two-player co-op mode. Playing with another person changes the pacing completely, especially during difficult boss fights and heavy enemy waves. Because of its intense action, memorable soundtrack, and challenging gameplay, Super Contra remains one of the most respected retro shooters from the NES era.

How To Play

In Super Contra, players control elite soldiers while running, jumping, and shooting through enemy-filled stages. Combat is fast and aggressive, with enemies attacking constantly from multiple directions. Most attacks defeat the player instantly, so movement and reaction timing are extremely important.

Players can collect weapon upgrades by destroying flying capsules hidden throughout stages. The Spread Gun fires multiple shots across the screen and is especially effective during crowded fights. Other upgrades include Laser weapons, Rapid Fire, and temporary shields. Losing a life removes the current weapon upgrade, making survival critical during later stages.

The game mixes traditional side-scrolling action with top-down combat levels unique to the NES version. During these sections, players move through enemy bases while avoiding traps, gun turrets, and large groups of soldiers. This creates a different pace compared to the side-scrolling stages and adds more variety to the gameplay.

Boss battles are larger and more intense than in the original Contra. Players often need to dodge heavy projectile patterns while attacking weak points at the same time. In co-op mode, two players can fight together simultaneously, making difficult sections more manageable while also creating much more chaotic action scenes.
