About Contra

Contra is a classic run-and-gun action game developed and published by Konami. Originally released in arcades in 1987 and later brought to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1988, the game became one of the most famous action titles of the 8-bit era. Known for its fast pacing, difficult gameplay, and memorable co-op mode, Contra is still considered one of the defining retro shooters on the NES.

The game follows commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they fight an alien invasion on a remote island. Players battle through jungles, military bases, waterfalls, and alien hideouts while facing nonstop enemy attacks. The action rarely slows down, giving the game a constant sense of pressure from start to finish.

Contra stands out because of its smooth controls and weapon system. Players can collect upgrades like the Spread Gun, Laser, and Rapid Fire weapons, each changing how combat feels. The NES version also mixes traditional side-scrolling stages with unique base levels viewed from behind the character, adding more variety than many action games from the same period.

The game is also famous for its difficulty. Most attacks can defeat the player instantly, so careful movement and fast reactions are extremely important. At the same time, the controls feel responsive enough that skilled players can overcome difficult sections through practice and memorization. Combined with its two-player co-op mode and energetic soundtrack, Contra became one of the most iconic NES action games ever released.

How To Play

In Contra, players run, jump, and shoot through enemy-filled stages while avoiding bullets, traps, and environmental hazards. Movement is fast, and enemies attack constantly, so players need to keep moving while aiming carefully in multiple directions.

Weapon upgrades are collected by destroying flying capsules during stages. The Spread Gun fires shots in several directions at once and is one of the most useful weapons in the game. Other upgrades include Laser weapons, Rapid Fire, and temporary protective barriers. Losing a life removes the current weapon upgrade, making survival especially important during later stages.

Most levels are side-scrolling action stages filled with platforms, enemy soldiers, turrets, and boss fights. Some sections switch to base infiltration stages where players move deeper into enemy compounds while destroying wall defenses and avoiding traps.

The game can also be played with two players at the same time. Co-op mode changes the pacing completely, allowing players to cover different areas of the screen and survive difficult fights together. Despite its challenging difficulty, Contra remains popular because of its responsive controls, fast gameplay, and memorable action sequences.
