About Contra: Legacy of War
Contra: Legacy of War is a third-person action shooter released for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996. Developed by Appaloosa Interactive and published by Konami, the game marked one of the series’ biggest changes by moving Contra from 2D side-scrolling gameplay into fully 3D environments. While it kept the fast shooting action the series was known for, Legacy of War introduced new movement mechanics, rotating camera angles, and arena-style combat built around the early 3D hardware era.
The story follows members of the Contra unit as they investigate a dangerous alien threat connected to a military disaster on a remote island. The atmosphere feels darker and more mechanical compared to earlier Contra games, with ruined bases, industrial corridors, alien laboratories, and heavily armed enemy compounds replacing the colorful arcade-style settings from the 16-bit entries.
Unlike the classic 2D games, Legacy of War focuses more on movement inside open environments. Players fight enemies while navigating narrow paths, rotating platforms, traps, and large combat arenas filled with turrets and alien creatures. The camera angle gives the game a very different feel from older Contra titles, especially during boss fights where players must dodge attacks while moving around larger spaces.
The game also includes local co-op multiplayer, allowing two players to fight together through the campaign. Different playable characters have their own weapon styles and attack behavior, giving some variety between playthroughs. Weapons include spread-style shots, rapid-fire weapons, explosives, and energy attacks designed for crowd control during larger enemy encounters.
Because Legacy of War arrived during the early years of 3D console gaming, the game has a very distinct PlayStation-era style. Polygonal enemy models, dramatic lighting effects, explosive boss battles, and aggressive soundtrack tracks give it a raw arcade atmosphere that feels very different from the earlier NES and SNES Contra games.
How To Play
In Contra: Legacy of War, players move through 3D stages while shooting enemy soldiers, alien creatures, turrets, and mechanical bosses. Instead of traditional side-scrolling movement, the game uses fixed-angle 3D environments where players can move freely around combat areas while attacking from multiple directions.
Players choose between different characters, each with unique weapons and attack ranges. Some characters focus on faster shooting speed, while others deal heavier damage with explosive-style weapons. Since enemies often appear from different sides of the screen, positioning and movement become much more important compared to earlier Contra games.
Stages include industrial facilities, alien laboratories, military compounds, and trap-filled corridors. Many areas contain moving hazards, rotating obstacles, narrow platforms, and enemy ambushes that require quick reactions. Some levels also feature vertical movement sections and platforming sequences built around the game’s 3D environments.
Boss battles are designed around larger arenas where players dodge projectile attacks while continuously moving around the battlefield. Some bosses use sweeping laser attacks, missile barrages, or charging attacks that force players to stay mobile at all times.
The game also supports two-player co-op, allowing players to fight together through the campaign. Co-op changes the pace of combat significantly since players can split enemy attention and cover different sides of the battlefield during larger encounters.
