About Contra 4
Contra 4 is a run-and-gun action shooter released for the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by WayForward Technologies and published by Konami. It was designed as a return to the series’ classic arcade roots, bringing back the tight 2D shooting gameplay that made Contra famous, while also adding modern design ideas built around the dual-screen handheld setup.
The game is set in a future where Earth is once again under attack from alien forces. Players take control of elite soldiers Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, along with other unlockable characters, as they fight through a global invasion spreading across cities, military bases, and alien-controlled warzones. The tone stays close to the original arcade games: fast, direct, and constantly pushing pressure on the player.
One of the most interesting aspects of Contra 4 is how it uses the Nintendo DS dual screens. In many stages, the action stretches vertically across both screens, allowing for taller environments and larger boss designs than traditional handheld Contra games. Players can climb ladders, jump between screens, and fight enemies attacking from above and below at the same time, which adds a new layer of spatial awareness to the classic formula.
The game also emphasizes classic weapon-based combat. Familiar pickups like the Spread Gun, Laser, and Machine Gun return, and players can switch weapons depending on enemy patterns and stage layout. Combined with fast movement, precise jumping, and constant enemy pressure, Contra 4 maintains the series’ signature difficulty while feeling tightly tuned for handheld play.
A major highlight is its arcade-style structure. Stages are short but extremely intense, filled with nonstop enemy waves, sudden ambushes, and large-scale boss fights that take advantage of the dual-screen presentation. It’s designed for replayability, rewarding players who learn enemy patterns and optimize their routes through each level.
How To Play
In Contra 4, players run, jump, climb, and shoot through fast-paced stages filled with enemies, traps, and environmental hazards. The controls are simple but demanding, focusing on precise movement and timing to survive constant enemy fire.
Players can choose from multiple characters, including classic heroes and unlockable fighters, each offering slight differences in movement and weapon handling. Throughout stages, weapon pickups appear that completely change combat style, such as spread shots for crowd control or rapid-fire guns for sustained damage. Managing weapons effectively is important, especially during boss fights.
The game makes full use of the Nintendo DS dual-screen setup. Levels often extend across both screens vertically, allowing enemies to attack from multiple heights. Players frequently move between screens by climbing ladders or jumping gaps, which adds a vertical layer to traditional Contra gameplay.
Stages are structured like classic arcade missions: short, intense, and filled with enemy waves that come from all directions. Players must react quickly to sudden ambushes, dodge projectiles, and keep moving forward while maintaining fire on enemies.
Boss fights are large and aggressive, often filling both screens with attacks, projectiles, and moving parts. These encounters require pattern recognition and careful positioning to survive, especially in later stages where enemy speed and density increase significantly.
