About Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX

Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX is a run-and-gun action shooter released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2002, developed by Appaloosa Interactive and published by Konami. It is a handheld adaptation of the classic Contra III: The Alien Wars, redesigned specifically for portable play while keeping the series’ fast arcade shooting identity intact.

The game continues the long-running conflict between elite Contra soldiers and a massive alien invasion threatening Earth. Players step into the boots of Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they fight through destroyed cities, military bases, and alien-controlled zones. Even on the smaller GBA hardware, the game tries to preserve the explosive pacing and high difficulty that define the Contra series.

Compared to its SNES counterpart, this version is adjusted for handheld gameplay. Some stages are redesigned or restructured to fit the GBA screen, and the overall presentation is slightly simplified, but the core experience remains focused on fast shooting, constant movement, and survival under heavy enemy pressure.

The game keeps the signature Contra weapon system, allowing players to pick up and switch between different firearms like Spread Guns, Machine Guns, and explosives. Each weapon changes how players approach enemies and boss fights, especially in tighter GBA environments where positioning matters more due to limited screen space.

Boss battles remain a key highlight, featuring large alien creatures and mechanical war machines with multi-phase attack patterns. Even with hardware limitations, the game tries to deliver scale and intensity through aggressive enemy design and fast-paced combat sequences.

How To Play

In Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX, players move through 2D side-scrolling stages while shooting enemies, dodging projectiles, and surviving constant combat pressure. The gameplay is built around quick reactions and precise movement, with enemies attacking from both ground and air positions.

Players can choose from classic Contra characters, each equipped with standard movement and shooting abilities. During stages, weapon pickups appear that completely change combat style. The Spread Gun is useful for clearing groups of enemies, while rapid-fire weapons help deal consistent damage to stronger targets and bosses.

Since this is a GBA version, stages are designed to fit smaller screens, meaning enemies often appear closer and faster. Players must stay alert and keep moving to avoid being overwhelmed, especially in later levels where enemy density increases significantly.

The game follows a traditional stage-based structure. Each level introduces new enemy types, environmental hazards, and platforming sections that require jumping, climbing, and careful timing. Some areas also include vertical movement segments where players must navigate ladders or elevated platforms while under fire.

Boss fights are intense, often filling the screen with large alien creatures or mechanical units that use projectile-based attack patterns. Players need to learn movement timing and weapon efficiency to survive these encounters, especially when multiple attack phases are involved.
