About Donkey Kong (Game Boy)

Donkey Kong (Game Boy) is a 2D action-puzzle platform game developed and published by Nintendo in 1994 for the Game Boy. It started as a remake of the original Donkey Kong arcade game but quickly evolved into something much bigger, expanding far beyond the original four-stage structure.

While the game begins by recreating the classic arcade setup—Mario chasing Donkey Kong through construction-site-style levels—it soon transforms into a full adventure. After the early stages, the game introduces a much deeper structure with dozens of new levels, puzzles, and mechanics that weren’t in the original arcade version.

This version is often praised for turning a simple arcade concept into a full handheld platforming experience, blending action, puzzle-solving, and exploration in a way that feels ahead of its time for the Game Boy era.

How To Play

In Donkey Kong (Game Boy), players control Mario through a mix of platforming and puzzle-based stages.

The game starts with familiar arcade-style levels where Mario must climb structures, avoid hazards, and reach Donkey Kong at the top of the stage. However, once Donkey Kong is “caught,” the game shifts into a larger adventure with multi-room levels and puzzle mechanics.

Mario can run, jump, climb ladders, and use objects such as keys and doors to progress through each stage. Many levels require solving environmental puzzles—finding the correct item, unlocking doors, or figuring out the right sequence to advance.

Donkey Kong also introduces more advanced movement tricks, including handstands, backflips, and rope-based traversal, which become essential in later stages where precision and timing are critical.

As the game progresses, stages become more complex, mixing enemy encounters with puzzle logic and platforming challenges. Success depends on both reflexes and problem-solving, making it more than just a traditional arcade remake.
