About Donkey Kong Land III

Donkey Kong Land III is a side-scrolling platform adventure developed by Rare and released by Nintendo in 1997 for the Game Boy. The game serves as the handheld counterpart to Donkey Kong Country 3, bringing the same exploration-heavy gameplay and colorful world design to portable systems. Instead of starring Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong, this adventure focuses on Dixie Kong and the energetic newcomer Kiddy Kong as they travel across the Northern Kremisphere searching for the missing Donkey Kong and the mysterious Lost World.

Even with the limitations of the original Game Boy hardware, the game manages to capture much of the atmosphere and personality that made the Donkey Kong Country series popular. Levels are filled with forests, snowy mountains, underwater ruins, factories, and dangerous cliffs, each packed with enemies, hidden bonus areas, and environmental hazards. The visuals use detailed sprites and clever animation techniques to recreate the look of the SNES games in monochrome form, giving the game a surprisingly lively appearance for a handheld title of its era.

Compared to earlier Donkey Kong Land games, Donkey Kong Land III places a much stronger focus on exploration and collectibles. Players are encouraged to search for hidden bonus barrels, DK Coins, Bear Coins, and secret exits scattered throughout the stages. Some areas can only be reached by using the different abilities of Dixie and Kiddy together, adding more depth to level navigation. The world map is also larger and more interconnected than before, making progression feel more like a full adventure instead of a simple sequence of levels.

The game’s pacing balances relaxed exploration with challenging platforming. Some stages focus on precise jumps and moving hazards, while others introduce animal companions, mine cart sections, or underwater exploration. Combined with memorable music and hidden secrets everywhere, Donkey Kong Land III feels like one of the most ambitious platformers released for the original Game Boy.

How To Play

In Donkey Kong Land III, players control Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong through side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, pits, moving platforms, and hidden pathways. Players can switch between both characters at almost any time, and each Kong has different abilities that help during exploration and platforming sections. Dixie can use her spinning ponytail to glide slowly through the air, making long jumps and difficult landings much easier. Kiddy Kong is stronger and heavier, allowing him to break certain obstacles, throw large barrels farther, and access hidden routes.

Stages are built around exploration as much as platforming. Bonus barrels hidden throughout levels lead to special challenge rooms where players can earn collectibles and extra lives. DK Coins are often placed in risky or hidden locations that require careful timing and observation to reach. Some exits also unlock alternate routes on the world map, rewarding players who thoroughly search every stage instead of rushing straight to the finish.

Animal companions return and play a major role in several levels. Ellie the elephant can spray water and defeat enemies, while Squawks the parrot helps players navigate dangerous flying sections. Certain stages also feature mine cart rides, underwater swimming sequences, and moving machinery that constantly changes the pace of gameplay.

Enemies range from basic Kremlings to larger armored creatures and tricky airborne attackers that force players to react quickly. Boss fights usually involve learning simple patterns and using the environment carefully rather than direct attacks. Precise jumps, barrel throwing, and teamwork between Dixie and Kiddy are essential for surviving later stages where hazards become faster and level layouts grow more complex.
