About The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX is an action-adventure game released for the Game Boy Color in 1998. Developed by Nintendo, it is an enhanced version of the original Link’s Awakening with full color support, updated visuals, and additional content designed specifically for the Game Boy Color hardware.

The adventure once again takes place on Koholint Island after Link is caught in a storm and wakes up far from Hyrule. What begins as a simple survival story slowly becomes stranger and more emotional as Link explores mysterious dungeons, meets unusual characters, and uncovers the truth behind the island and the Wind Fish.

Compared to the original Game Boy release, the DX version feels more lively thanks to its colorized world and improved presentation. Forests, villages, beaches, caves, and dungeons all have clearer visual identity, making exploration easier and more atmospheric on handheld hardware.

One of the biggest additions is the Color Dungeon, an entirely new optional dungeon exclusive to the DX version. Completing it rewards players with special tunics that change Link’s attack or defense abilities, adding extra replay value and customization not found in the original release.

The game also keeps the unusual charm that made Link’s Awakening memorable in the first place. Koholint Island feels dreamlike and unpredictable, mixing emotional story moments with humor, strange NPCs, hidden secrets, and references to other Nintendo games.

Even years later, many players still consider Link’s Awakening DX one of the strongest handheld Zelda adventures because of how naturally it combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and atmosphere on the Game Boy Color.

How To Play

In Link’s Awakening DX, players guide Link across Koholint Island while exploring dungeons, solving puzzles, fighting monsters, and collecting instruments needed to awaken the Wind Fish.

Combat uses swords, shields, bombs, bows, boomerangs, and magical items found throughout the adventure. Since only a limited number of items can be equipped at once, players frequently swap equipment depending on enemy encounters or puzzle requirements.

The overworld is packed with hidden caves, side quests, item trades, and optional secrets. The long trading sequence returns from the original game and remains an important part of progression, rewarding players who carefully explore every part of the island and interact with NPCs.

The DX version’s biggest gameplay addition is the Color Dungeon. This extra dungeon introduces color-based puzzles and rewards Link with special tunics that increase either attack strength or defense. It gives returning players something completely new to discover compared to the monochrome Game Boy version.

Movement also feels more dynamic thanks to items like Roc’s Feather, which allows Link to jump over pits and obstacles. Combined with puzzle-heavy dungeon layouts and hidden pathways, exploration feels more varied than many earlier Zelda games on handheld systems.
