About Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Spyro: Year of the Dragon is a 3D platform adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2000 for the PlayStation. It is the third main entry in the original Spyro trilogy and expands the series with larger worlds, additional playable characters, and more varied gameplay styles.
The story begins during the “Year of the Dragon” celebration, when dragon eggs are suddenly stolen by a mysterious sorceress and her army of Rhynocs. Spyro sets out across multiple fantasy worlds to recover the missing eggs and stop the Sorceress before the Dragon Realms are permanently threatened.
Compared to earlier games, Year of the Dragon places a stronger focus on exploration variety and side activities. Alongside Spyro, players can control several different characters with their own movement styles and combat mechanics, giving stages a more dynamic feel.
The game became especially popular for its colorful level design, smooth platforming controls, hidden collectibles, and playful atmosphere. Its large environments and wide range of mini-games helped make it one of the most memorable 3D platformers on the original PlayStation.
How To Play
In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, players explore large 3D platforming worlds filled with enemies, collectibles, puzzles, and hidden areas.
Spyro can run, jump, glide, swim, charge into enemies, and use fire breath to defeat opponents or activate objects in the environment. Platforming and movement control are central to gameplay, especially when crossing large gaps or reaching hidden sections of each level.
The main objective is to recover stolen dragon eggs scattered across different worlds. Many eggs are earned by completing platforming challenges, solving puzzles, or finishing mini-games rather than simply reaching the end of a stage.
Unlike previous entries, the game introduces multiple playable characters, each with unique controls and gameplay mechanics. Some focus on ranged attacks, while others emphasize strength, climbing, or special movement abilities that change how levels are approached.
Stages also include racing events, skateboarding sections, underwater exploration, and mission-based challenges that add variety between traditional platforming areas.
As players progress, levels become larger and more complex, requiring better timing, exploration skills, and mastery of different character abilities to uncover every collectible and complete the adventure.
