About Adventure Island II

Adventure Island II is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Hudson Soft for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. The game continues Master Higgins’ tropical adventure as he travels across dangerous islands to rescue Tina from alien invaders. While the original Adventure Island focused mostly on nonstop arcade-style action, this sequel adds more exploration, hidden paths, and one of the series’ most memorable features — dinosaur companions.

The game keeps the fast platforming style of the first title but feels larger and more varied. Instead of moving through stages in a straight line, players travel between islands using an overworld map. Different areas include jungles, caves, volcanoes, snowy mountains, and underwater stages filled with enemies and traps. The colorful environments and energetic music give the game a lighter, more adventurous feeling even when the difficulty starts increasing later on.

Adventure Island II is especially remembered for its rideable dinosaurs. Players can hatch dinosaur partners from hidden eggs during stages, and each one has special abilities. Some dinosaurs breathe fire, while others help with swimming or crossing dangerous terrain. These companions change how certain sections are played and make the game feel more dynamic than the original Adventure Island.

Although the controls remain simple, the game still requires good timing and fast reactions. Skateboards return as power-ups, enemy placement becomes trickier in later stages, and health constantly drains over time, forcing players to keep moving forward. The combination of exploration, dinosaur companions, and classic NES platforming made Adventure Island II one of the most popular games in the series.

How To Play

In Adventure Island II, players control Master Higgins through side-scrolling stages by running, jumping, and throwing stone hammers at enemies. Like the first game, Higgins constantly loses health over time, so collecting fruit and food items is necessary to survive. Waiting too long or missing important pickups can quickly drain the health meter.

The biggest gameplay addition is the dinosaur system. Hidden eggs inside stages can hatch different dinosaur companions with unique abilities. Some dinosaurs shoot fireballs for stronger attacks, while others improve swimming or help players move safely through difficult terrain. Taking damage causes Higgins to lose his dinosaur, which can make later sections much harder.

Stages contain moving platforms, collapsing bridges, flying enemies, spikes, lava pits, and underwater areas that require careful timing. The overworld map also allows players to travel between islands and discover hidden routes or bonus areas, making the adventure feel less linear than the original game.

Skateboards return as speed-boosting power-ups, increasing movement speed but also making jumps harder to control. Boss fights appear at the end of islands and usually focus on timing attacks while avoiding enemy patterns. Compared to the first Adventure Island, this sequel adds more exploration and variety while keeping the fast-paced platform gameplay that NES fans remember.
