Super Adventure Island II is a side-scrolling action RPG platform game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994. Developed by Make Software and published by Hudson Soft, the game takes the Adventure Island series in a very different direction compared to earlier entries. Instead of focusing only on fast arcade-style platforming, this sequel introduces exploration, equipment upgrades, inventory management, and RPG-style progression.
The story begins when Master Higgins and Tina are attacked during a peaceful vacation. After Tina disappears, Higgins sets off across forests, caves, snowy mountains, underwater ruins, and volcanic islands to rescue her and uncover the mystery behind the invasion. While the game still keeps the colorful tropical look of the series, the overall structure feels much larger and more adventure-focused than previous Adventure Island games.
One of the biggest changes is the connected world design. Rather than clearing separate stages one by one, players explore larger areas, discover hidden routes, collect useful items, and unlock new regions over time. The game also adds equipment such as swords, armor, magic rings, and healing items, giving combat more depth than the simple stone axe gameplay of earlier titles.
Visually, Super Adventure Island II has detailed SNES environments with larger character sprites and atmospheric backgrounds. The pacing is slower and more exploration-focused, making it feel closer to an action RPG than a traditional arcade platformer. Because of this unique style, many retro players consider it one of the most unusual games in the entire Adventure Island series.
How To Play
In Super Adventure Island II, players control Master Higgins while exploring interconnected areas filled with enemies, hidden passages, treasure chests, and bosses. Higgins can jump, swim, climb, and attack using swords and other weapons instead of the classic stone axes from earlier games.
Combat plays a much bigger role in this entry. Players collect equipment upgrades such as stronger weapons, armor, shields, and magic items that improve survival during later areas. Healing items and inventory management also become important during longer sections of exploration.
The game focuses heavily on exploration and backtracking. Certain areas remain inaccessible until players obtain specific items or abilities, encouraging revisits to older regions. Hidden caves, underwater sections, villages, and secret rooms often contain upgrades or useful equipment.
Boss fights are larger and more strategic than in earlier Adventure Island games. Instead of simple platform encounters, many bosses require careful movement, timing, and equipment preparation. Combined with its RPG elements and slower pacing, Super Adventure Island II feels very different from the fast arcade style of the original NES entries.
