About Sonic 3D Blast

Sonic 3D Blast is a 3D-isometric platform adventure game released for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive and Sega Saturn in 1996. Developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Sega, it marks a major shift for the Sonic series by reimagining its fast-paced platforming into a pseudo-3D, exploration-focused experience.

The story follows Sonic as he discovers that Dr. Robotnik has trapped the Flickies—small bird-like creatures—inside robotic enemies to power his latest scheme. Sonic must travel through a series of themed worlds to rescue the Flickies and stop Robotnik’s plans before they escalate further.

Unlike the traditional side-scrolling Sonic games, Sonic 3D Blast uses an isometric perspective, giving the levels a more three-dimensional feel. Instead of pure speed, the game emphasizes careful movement, exploration, and enemy tracking within more open environments.

Each stage is designed as a self-contained area filled with enemies, hidden routes, platforms, and Flickies that must be collected and guided to safety. The visual style shifts Sonic into a more exploratory role, blending platforming with light puzzle-solving elements.

How To Play

In Sonic 3D Blast, players control Sonic from an isometric viewpoint as they move through multi-directional stages filled with enemies and hidden areas.

The main objective in each level is to rescue trapped Flickies by defeating enemies, then guide the freed Flickies safely to the goal. Sonic can defeat enemies by jumping on them or using a spin attack, releasing the Flickies they contain.

Once freed, Flickies follow Sonic and can change behavior depending on how many are collected, adding a layer of strategy when navigating hazards and enemies. If Sonic gets hit without rings, he loses collected Flickies, making careful movement important.

Stages require exploration rather than pure speed. Players must search for enemies across different areas of each zone while avoiding spikes, traps, and environmental hazards. Some paths are easier but longer, while others are more dangerous but faster.

Boss encounters against Dr. Robotnik typically involve pattern-based attacks and mechanical contraptions, requiring timing and positioning rather than direct speed-based gameplay.

As the game progresses, levels become more complex, with larger environments, trickier enemy placements, and more demanding Flicky management, encouraging players to balance risk and exploration carefully.
