About The Amazing Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man is a side-scrolling action platform game released for the original Game Boy in 1990. Developed by Rare and published by LJN, it was one of the earliest portable adventures starring Marvel's famous web-slinger. Rather than following a movie storyline, the game tells its own comic-inspired tale in which several of Spider-Man's greatest enemies uncover Peter Parker's secret identity and kidnap Mary Jane. With little time to waste, Spider-Man sets out across New York City to track down the villains one by one and bring her home safely.

The adventure takes Spider-Man through alleys, rooftops, sewers, and other dangerous locations filled with enemies and traps. Between stages, villains taunt him over the phone, giving the game a light comic-book feel while gradually revealing the next destination. Familiar foes make appearances throughout the journey, turning each stage into a hunt for the next showdown.

Built specifically for Nintendo's monochrome handheld, the game combines platforming with close-range combat and web-based movement. Although limited by the hardware of the time, Rare managed to give Spider-Man a variety of moves and several unique stage designs that helped the game stand out among early superhero titles. It would later receive two Game Boy sequels, making it the beginning of a small portable trilogy.

How To Play

The Amazing Spider-Man is played from a side-view perspective. Spider-Man moves through stages by running, jumping, punching enemies, and avoiding hazards scattered throughout each area. Ordinary thugs appear frequently, while stronger supervillains await at the end of major sections.

Unlike later Spider-Man games that focus on open environments, this Game Boy version is built around carefully designed stages. Some levels emphasize straightforward action, while others introduce climbing sections and rooftop sequences where players must use Spider-Man's mobility to safely navigate gaps and obstacles. Certain areas even require precise timing when using webs and jumps.

Spider-Man can perform both normal and high jumps, allowing him to reach platforms and dodge incoming attacks. His web abilities are more limited than in modern games, but they play an important role in movement and combat. Enemies often attack from windows, sewer openings, and unexpected directions, making positioning just as important as attacking.

Each stage ends with a battle against one of Spider-Man's enemies. After defeating a boss, another villain contacts Spider-Man and points him toward the next location. This structure gives the adventure the feeling of progressing through an old comic series, with every chapter bringing a new challenge and another step closer to rescuing Mary Jane.
