About Spider-Man: The Animated Series
Spider-Man: The Animated Series is a 1995 action platform game based on the popular Marvel cartoon that aired during the mid-1990s. Developed by Western Technologies and published by Acclaim Entertainment, the game was released for both the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Rather than adapting a single episode, it tells an original story while staying faithful to the look and tone of the animated series.
Trouble begins when New York is thrown into chaos by a series of attacks involving some of Spider-Man's greatest enemies. Venom, Carnage, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, and Mysterio all make appearances, forcing Peter Parker into a long battle that stretches from city streets and underground sewers to laboratories and enemy hideouts. Comic-style cutscenes and large character portraits help recreate the atmosphere of the television show, making the adventure feel like a lost episode from the series.
Although the Genesis and SNES versions follow the same storyline, each has its own stage layouts and visual differences. The Sega Genesis edition features darker color tones and a soundtrack that gives the game a slightly more serious atmosphere. It also retains the crossover spirit of the animated series by introducing appearances from other Marvel heroes during key moments of the story.
Players who want to revisit this cartoon-inspired adventure can launch the Sega Genesis Emulator on Emulator Games Zone and experience one of Spider-Man's most recognizable 16-bit games directly from their browser.
How To Play
Players guide Spider-Man through a series of stages set across New York, including underground tunnels, laboratories, warehouses, and rooftops. Enemies appear frequently, and many sections combine platforming with combat, so careful jumps and positioning are just as important as defeating opponents.
Spider-Man relies on punches and kicks for standard attacks, while web cartridges provide access to several special moves. Web shots can temporarily stop enemies, and stronger techniques deal more damage at the cost of additional web fluid. Since the supply is limited, saving special attacks for tougher situations becomes an important part of progressing through later stages.
Compared with the SNES release, the Sega Genesis version features different stage layouts and enemy placement. Several areas are narrower and place more emphasis on timing, especially when moving through hazards or dealing with enemies attacking from multiple directions. Rushing forward often leads to unnecessary damage, making patience more rewarding.
Marvel heroes occasionally appear to assist during certain encounters, providing temporary support and adding variety to the adventure. Boss battles against Venom, Carnage, Green Goblin, Mysterio, and Doctor Octopus each have distinct attack patterns, so success usually comes from observing their movements and finding safe opportunities to strike rather than simply attacking nonstop.
