About Tomb Raider Games

Tomb Raider first launched in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and PC, developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive. It quickly became one of the most recognizable action-adventure series of the late 90s, largely thanks to its mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and cinematic platforming.

The games follow Lara Croft, an archaeologist-adventurer who travels across ancient ruins, lost cities, and dangerous tombs in search of powerful artifacts. Gameplay is built around third-person exploration, where players climb, jump, swim, and solve environmental puzzles while navigating complex, trap-filled areas.

Combat is usually secondary to exploration, but still plays an important role. Players use pistols, shotguns, and other weapons to deal with wild animals and enemies encountered in tombs or hostile environments. A lot of the challenge comes from positioning, timing jumps, and figuring out how to progress through layered environments rather than pure combat difficulty.

Early entries on platforms like the PlayStation and Sega Saturn are known for their tank-style controls and grid-like movement system. While simple by today’s standards, this control scheme is closely tied to the puzzle design, requiring careful alignment when jumping between ledges or activating switches. Later games refined movement and camera systems, making exploration smoother while keeping the core idea intact.

Across different generations, Tomb Raider evolved from slow, methodical exploration to more fluid action-adventure gameplay, but the focus has always stayed on discovery, environmental puzzles, and navigating dangerous ancient spaces.

On Emulator Games Zone, classic Tomb Raider titles offer that original style of exploration-driven gameplay—careful movement, hidden secrets, and the steady satisfaction of solving each tomb step by step.
