About Pokemon Red Version

Pokémon Red Version is one of the original titles that introduced the Pokémon universe to players around the world. Released in 1998 for the Nintendo Game Boy, it was developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, marking the beginning of a long-running RPG franchise that would later become a global gaming phenomenon.

Set in the fictional Kanto region, the game puts you in the role of a young Trainer starting their journey from Pallet Town. Your goal is simple but addictive: travel across towns, catch wild creatures known as Pokémon, train them, and challenge the region’s eight Gym Leaders. Along the way, you also uncover the activities of the criminal organization Team Rocket, adding a light story thread that ties the adventure together.

At its core, Pokémon Red Version is a turn-based role-playing game (RPG) built around exploration, collection, and strategic battles. The game originally featured 151 Pokémon species, each with different types, strengths, and evolution paths, encouraging players to experiment and trade with others to complete their collection.

What made it stand out at the time was not just the creature-collecting idea, but how naturally everything fit together: exploration, battles, trading via link cable, and progression through a structured world that still felt open-ended for its time.

How To Play

In Pokémon Red Version, you begin your journey by choosing one of three starter Pokémon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. From there, the game opens up into a top-down world where you explore routes, cities, caves, and forests across the Kanto region.

Movement is controlled using the directional pad, while interactions with the world happen through simple menu commands like talking, using items, or checking your Pokémon. When you encounter wild Pokémon or trainers, the game switches into turn-based battle mode.

In battles, you select actions such as Fight, Bag, Pokémon, or Run. Each Pokémon has moves based on its type, and battles are won by reducing the opponent’s HP to zero. Strategy matters—type advantages (like Water beating Fire) are a core part of the gameplay loop.

As you progress, you’ll:

  • Defeat Gym Leaders to earn badges
  • Unlock new areas as you explore
  • Catch stronger Pokémon in different environments
  • Build a balanced team for battles
  • Challenge the Elite Four and become the Pokémon Champion

The game also encourages interaction with other players through trading and battling using link features, making team building and collection a long-term goal rather than a one-time experience.

In Emulator Games Zone, Pokémon Red Version works especially well as a pick-up-and-play classic—easy to start, but surprisingly deep once you begin experimenting with team strategies and exploring every corner of Kanto.
