About Dragon Ball Z: Assault of the Saiyans

Dragon Ball Z: Assault of the Saiyans (original Japanese title: Dragon Ball Z: Kyōshū! Saiyajin) is a role-playing game developed by TOSE and published by Bandai, originally released in 1990 for the Family Computer. It is the first Dragon Ball Z game released for the system and adapts the beginning of the Saiyan Saga from the anime and manga. The game combines RPG exploration with a strategic card-based battle system, offering a different experience from traditional Dragon Ball fighting games.

The story begins after the arrival of Raditz on Earth, revealing Goku’s Saiyan origins and warning of the arrival of two even stronger Saiyan warriors. Players follow Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Vegeta, and other fighters as they prepare for the Saiyan invasion. The adventure covers important events from the early Dragon Ball Z storyline, including training, battles against powerful enemies, and the fight to protect Earth from the Saiyan threat.

You can play Dragon Ball Z: Assault of the Saiyans online on Emulator Games Zone with a NES Emulator and experience this classic Dragon Ball Z RPG adventure directly in your browser. This Famicom version focuses on team building, exploration, and tactical battles rather than direct fighting. Compared with earlier Dragon Ball games, it introduces a larger cast of playable characters and a stronger RPG structure where players develop their fighters and plan their actions during battles.

Players travel across locations from the Saiyan Saga, train their characters, and face enemies through turn-based encounters. The game features familiar techniques such as Kamehameha and other special moves, while allowing players to control different members of the Z Fighters. Its combination of story progression, character growth, and strategic combat makes it one of the more important early Dragon Ball Z adaptations.

How To Play

Players control the Z Fighters as they prepare for the Saiyans’ arrival and fight through a series of battles connected to the Dragon Ball Z storyline. The gameplay combines map exploration, training, character development, and turn-based combat where choosing the right actions is key.

Battles use a card-based command system where players select cards to determine attacks, movement, defense, and special techniques. Each card has different effects, and players need to consider their choices carefully when facing stronger opponents. Powerful moves can deal heavy damage, but using them at the wrong time may leave the team at a disadvantage.

During the adventure, players can use different characters including Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, and Vegeta. Each fighter has unique abilities and can become stronger through battles. Players earn experience, increase their battle power, and prepare their team for increasingly difficult enemies.

The game also includes training sections where players can improve their fighters before major battles. Moving through different areas allows players to discover story events, encounter enemies, and progress through the Saiyan Saga. The combination of exploration and RPG mechanics gives the game a slower and more strategic style compared with later Dragon Ball action titles.

Unlike Dragon Ball games focused on one-on-one fighting, Dragon Ball Z: Assault of the Saiyans emphasizes planning, character growth, and team management. Its card-based battles and RPG progression create a unique way to experience Goku and his allies’ first major battles in Dragon Ball Z.
