Double Dragon is one of the games that basically defined the “beat ’em up” genre. Sometimes you coordinate attacks, sometimes you accidentally hit each other while trying to land a punch, and sometimes that chaos becomes part of the fun.
Weapons also play a big role. You can pick up bats, knives, and other items dropped by enemies, which adds a bit of strategy to each fight. Do you rush in bare-handed or grab a weapon first? That decision often decides how smooth or messy a stage becomes.
Later entries in the series expanded the combat system with more moves, tighter controls, and improved visuals, but the core loop stayed the same: simple movement, direct combat, and steady progression through increasingly tough enemy groups.
