About Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. The original version first launched in 1998 for the PlayStation, before being ported to platforms including Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PC, GameCube, and Sega Dreamcast over the following years. It continues the story of the original Resident Evil, but shifts the action to the doomed streets of Raccoon City, where a viral outbreak has turned ordinary citizens into terrifying creatures.

The story follows two protagonists who arrive in the city from different directions: rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy on his first day of duty, and college student Claire Redfield, who is searching for her missing brother Chris. Their paths cross as they struggle to survive collapsing streets, abandoned buildings, and the zombie-infested Raccoon City Police Department. Although they experience many of the same locations, each character has unique scenes, encounters, and story developments that reveal different sides of the outbreak.

Unlike many action-focused horror games, Resident Evil 2 builds tension through limited resources and careful exploration. Ammunition, healing items, and inventory space are all scarce, so every decision matters. Locked doors, hidden keys, environmental puzzles, and unexpected enemy encounters constantly encourage players to think before acting instead of simply fighting everything in sight. The game also introduced the memorable "Zapping System," allowing actions taken in one character's scenario to affect the other, making multiple playthroughs feel worthwhile.

Resident Evil 2 became one of the defining titles of the PlayStation era thanks to its cinematic presentation, memorable locations, and balance between horror, puzzle-solving, and exploration. If you'd like to revisit this classic today, you can play the original PlayStation version online using the PlayStation Emulator here at Emulator Games Zone, making it easy to experience one of survival horror's most influential adventures directly in your browser.

How To Play

Resident Evil 2 combines exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving into a slow-paced survival experience. As either Leon or Claire, you'll search every room for useful supplies while carefully managing limited inventory space. Weapons range from handguns and shotguns to more powerful firearms, but ammunition is never plentiful, so avoiding unnecessary fights is often the smarter choice.

The original PlayStation version is built around two connected scenarios. After completing the game with one character, you unlock the second character's "B" scenario, where enemy placement, item locations, boss encounters, and certain story events change. Choices made during the first playthrough can even influence parts of the second, giving the game much more replay value than a standard single campaign.

Most areas are interconnected through locked doors, key items, and mechanical puzzles. You'll spend just as much time examining statues, collecting keys, moving objects, and finding hidden passages as you will fighting monsters. Backtracking is a core part of progression, and remembering previously blocked routes often leads to valuable equipment or entirely new sections of the map.

Combat rewards patience rather than speed. Zombies can absorb multiple shots, powerful creatures appear without warning, and some enemies are best avoided altogether to conserve ammunition. Learning when to fight, when to run, and which routes are safest becomes an important survival skill as the outbreak grows more dangerous. Throughout the adventure, typewriters and ink ribbons provide limited opportunities to save your progress, adding another layer of tension to every decision you make.
